چکیده

Incrustations and other biological growths in water mains and distribution pipes cause considerable difficulties in water engineering. The control of such obstructions in the pipes, in most cases, largely depends upon the character and composition of the water and the nature of the pipe material. A few years ago some studies were carried out at Bangalore on the tubercular incrustations in water pipes and the importance of the newly discovered species of Pseudomonas occurring in the ferruginous tubercles was indicated (Pillai, 1935, 1938). The observations on this bacillus also lent some support to the view expressed by Ellis (1919) in his monograph on ' iron bacteria ' that in considering the affinities of the iron bacteria ' we

Effect of sulfate on the transformation of corrosion scale composition and bacterial community in cast iron water distribution pipes.

The chemical stability of iron corrosion scales and the microbial community of biofilm in drinking water distribution system (DWDS) can have great impact on the iron corrosion and corrosion product release, which may result in "red water" issues, particularly under the situation of source water switch. In this work, experimental pipe loops were set up to investigate the effect of sulfate on the...

Biofilms from a Brazilian water distribution system include filamentous fungi.

Filamentous fungi in drinking water can block water pipes, can cause organoleptic biodeterioration, and are a source of pathogens. There are increasing reports of the involvement of the organisms in biofilms. This present study describes a sampling device that can be inserted directly into pipes within water distribution systems, allowing biofilm formation in situ. Calcofluor White M2R staining...

The Investigation of Subsidence Effect on Buried Pipes in 3D Space

Buried pipes in the modern societies are considered as lifelines with a vital and essential role in the human life cycle. The performance of buried pipes is affected by many factors such as ground surface subsidence. In this paper, the effect of subsidence on pipelines is investigated using a three-dimensional numerical modeling developed in FLAC3D software for four types of most commonly used ...

Impact of Piping Materials on Water Quality in Tegucigalpa, Honduras

The possible effects of pipe materials on drinking water quality have been analyzed in the distribution system of the water treatment plant of “La Concepción” in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. “La Concepción” is a surface water reservoir experiencing biogeochemical cycling of manganese. Black water problems have been reported in the distribution system since 1998. An evaluation of the potential influen...

Gray cast-iron water pipe metallurgy

The results of a metallographic study of grey cast iron water pipes are reported. These pipes had been installed between 1885 and 1973 in eight different water systems. Each pipe had been extracted during scheduled maintenance or failure repairs to provide data for a larger study to produce a methodology for determining the residual life of grey cast iron pipes. This metallographic study was co...
